2026 Changbaishan Travel Guide for Foreigners: Tickets, Best Route & When to Visit

A practical Changbaishan travel guide for foreign visitors, covering the North and West Slopes, Heaven Lake, tickets, transport, accommodation, weather, and the easiest first-time itinerary.

Last verified:

Changbaishan is best known for Tianchi, or Heaven Lake, a volcanic crater lake high in the mountains of northeastern China.

Planning a trip here mainly comes down to one decision: which side of the mountain should you visit?

There are three scenic areas on the Chinese side — North, West and South. They have separate entrances, separate tickets and very different visitor experiences. For an independent traveler in 2026, the real choice is between the North Slope and the West Slope. The South Slope is currently not a practical option for ordinary independent visitors.

For most first-time visitors, I recommend the North Slope.

Stay in Erdaobaihe the night before, spend one full day in the scenic area, and give yourself a second day if seeing Heaven Lake is especially important to you.

That is the simplest way to plan Changbaishan, and for most people, the best one.

Changbaishan North, West and South Slopes Explained

Changbaishan lies in Jilin Province, close to the border with North Korea. The mountain is volcanic, and Heaven Lake fills the crater near its summit at an elevation of about 2,189 meters.

Most sightseeing takes place inside managed scenic areas.

Visitors enter through one of the designated scenic-area entrances, take sightseeing buses into the mountains and then continue to different attractions from there.

The three Chinese scenic areas are:

  • North Scenic Area

  • West Scenic Area

  • South Scenic Area

These are not different trails up the same mountain.

Heaven Lake in summer, photographed in August 2026 by Bro Chong. The surrounding mountains are clear, with green slopes visible around the lake.

Each has its own entrance and transport system, and the North and West scenic-area hubs are roughly 100 km apart.

That distance matters when you book accommodation. A hotel that is convenient for the West Slope can be very inconvenient for the North Slope.

For a normal first trip, choose your slope first and choose your hotel afterwards.

North Slope or West Slope?

Here is the short answer.

Choose the North Slope if this is your first visit.

Choose the West Slope if your main priority is getting the widest possible view of Heaven Lake and you do not mind climbing more than 1,400 steps.

The two routes offer noticeably different days on the mountain.

North Slope: The Best First Trip

The North Slope is the most developed and most convenient part of Changbaishan.

It also has the greatest concentration of attractions.

A typical day includes:

  • Heaven Lake

  • Changbai Waterfall

  • the geothermal spring area

  • Green Deep Pool

  • the forest area

This makes the North Slope feel like a complete day trip rather than a single-viewpoint excursion.

The usual base is Erdaobaihe, a small tourist town also known as Chibei District.

It has plenty of hotels and restaurants and sits close to Changbaishan Railway Station. If you are arriving by high-speed rail and visiting Changbaishan for the first time, this is usually the easiest place to stay.

What a North Slope day looks like

You enter the scenic area and take the internal sightseeing bus into the mountains.

To reach the Heaven Lake viewpoint, you transfer to a special mountain vehicle for the final section.

There is no cable car to Heaven Lake on the North Slope.

Once the vehicle reaches the summit area, the remaining walk is short.

After Heaven Lake, you can continue to the waterfall and geothermal area, then visit Green Deep Pool and the forest if you still have time and energy.

Most visitors should allow around five to six hours inside the scenic area.

There is little serious climbing, so the North Slope is also the better option for families, older travelers and anyone who simply does not want a physically demanding day.

What is the downside?

Crowds.

The North Slope is the most popular route, particularly during the Chinese summer holidays.

Its Heaven Lake viewpoint is also less open than the West Slope viewpoint. The crater walls frame more of the view.

For most first-time visitors, I still think the extra sights and easier logistics matter more.

West Slope: Better Views of Heaven Lake

The West Slope is much more focused on Heaven Lake itself.

The view from this side is broader and more open than the North Slope view.

Getting there takes more effort.

After taking the scenic-area transport uphill, you still have to climb around 1,442 steps to reach the main viewpoint.

The staircase is well built and technically easy. A reasonably fit adult should have no problem completing it.

The altitude and wind are what make it tiring.

Allow about an hour for the climb if you prefer to stop occasionally.

The rest of the West Slope has fewer major attractions. Depending on the season, visitors may also see alpine flowers and visit Jinjiang Grand Canyon.

A useful way to think about the West Slope is that you are coming mainly for one excellent view of Heaven Lake.

Where to stay for the West Slope

The main bases are:

  • Songjianghe

  • Changbaishan Wanda International Resort

Songjianghe is the more practical option if sightseeing is the main purpose of your trip.

Wanda is better suited to travelers combining Changbaishan with skiing, resort hotels or a longer holiday.

My recommendationBest choice for most visitorsWorth considering for the view

If you only have one day, I would choose the North Slope.

The West Slope makes more sense when the Heaven Lake panorama is the part of Changbaishan you care about most.

Should You Visit Both Sides?

For most travelers, one side is enough.

Visiting both takes more time than it may appear when looking at a map.

The North and West areas use different bases, and changing sides usually means changing hotels or spending a significant part of the day in transit.

You will also be seeing the same Heaven Lake twice, although from different angles.

There is one situation where visiting both makes sense: you really want to see Heaven Lake and have three days available.

Weather at the summit changes quickly.

Fog, strong wind, snow and icy roads can all affect access to the lake. There have even been days when summit access on one side was closed while another side remained open.

Visiting both slopes therefore gives you another chance.

I would treat that as weather insurance rather than something every visitor needs to do.

What About the South Slope?

Leave it out of a normal 2026 itinerary.

The South Scenic Area was affected by landslides and infrastructure damage during the year, and ordinary independent access is currently restricted.

Some organized or specially arranged visits may still be possible, but this is not something I would recommend planning a first Changbaishan trip around.

For an independent traveler, the useful choices remain the North and West slopes.

How Many Days Do You Need?

One day

Spend it on the North Slope.

Arrive in Erdaobaihe the previous evening so you can start early the next morning.

This is enough time for the main sights if the weather cooperates.

Two days

This is what I recommend for most visitors.

Use one day for the North Slope and keep the other day flexible.

The second day is useful because Heaven Lake access is weather-dependent.

If you see the lake on your first day, you can relax, visit a hot spring or leave earlier than planned.

If the summit is closed, you still have another opportunity.

I prefer this arrangement to trying to squeeze the North and West slopes into two packed days.

Three days

Three days gives you enough time to visit both North and West if you want to.

A practical version would be:

Day 1: North Slope
Day 2: Move to Songjianghe or the Wanda area
Day 3: West Slope

For most sightseeing trips, there is little reason to stay longer than three days.

Ski trips are a different matter.

Where to Stay

Accommodation at Changbaishan should always be chosen according to the scenic area you plan to visit.

North Slope: Stay in Erdaobaihe

For a first visit, Erdaobaihe is the obvious base.

It has a good range of hotels and restaurants and is the most convenient town for the North Scenic Area.

Changbaishan Railway Station is also here.

The town has local buses, taxis and hotel transfer options, so getting around is relatively easy even if you do not speak Chinese.

West Slope: Stay in Songjianghe or Wanda

For the West Slope, stay around Songjianghe or Changbaishan Wanda International Resort.

Songjianghe is more practical for straightforward sightseeing.

Wanda is a full resort area and makes more sense if you want skiing, resort facilities or an upscale hotel stay.

These western bases are a long way from Erdaobaihe, so check the location carefully before booking.

Changbaishan Railway Station, West Station and Airport

The transport names are easier to understand once you connect them with the two main routes.

Changbaishan Railway Station

Best for:

Erdaobaihe + North Slope

The station is in the Erdaobaihe area and is the most convenient rail gateway for the North Scenic Area.

Changbaishan West Railway Station

Best for:

Songjianghe + West Slope

This station was previously called Songjianghe Station and was renamed Changbaishan West Railway Station.

Changbaishan Airport

Best for:

West Slope + Wanda Resort

The airport is on the western side of Changbaishan, around 15 km from the West Slope area according to the local tourism authorities.

It is much farther from the North Scenic Area.

If you are planning a North Slope trip, do not choose a flight simply because the airport is called “Changbaishan Airport.” Check the onward transfer first.

Getting Between the North and West Sides

The rail connection has made this easier than it used to be.

Trains run between Changbaishan Railway Station and Changbaishan West Railway Station, with more than ten services on a typical day according to local authorities.

There are also direct tourist transport services between Chibei and Chixi.

If you plan to visit both slopes, rail is usually the most straightforward option.

Changing hotels still makes sense. Staying on one side and commuting back and forth wastes too much time.

Changbaishan Tickets in 2026

A lot of older information online is now wrong.

The previous policy allowing visitors to reuse a ticket across the North and West scenic areas for several days ended in 2023.

In 2026, tickets are valid for the booked scenic area and visit only.

The North and West slopes require separate reservations.

North Slope costs

A typical North Slope visit currently includes:

  • Entrance ticket: RMB 105

  • Scenic-area sightseeing bus: RMB 85

  • Mountain vehicle to the Heaven Lake summit area: RMB 80

That puts the main cost at around RMB 270 per person, before any additional local transfer charge.

The final RMB 80 is worth remembering.

It is the vehicle taking visitors up toward the Heaven Lake viewpoint. There is no cable car.

West Slope costs

The West Slope entrance ticket is also RMB 105, with the scenic-area bus charged separately.

You do not pay for the North Slope summit vehicle because the final ascent is made on foot.

Ticket prices and local transport fees can change, so check the official booking system before paying.

How Foreign Visitors Buy Tickets

Changbaishan uses real-name, timed reservations.

The official online booking channels are the Changbaishan WeChat Mini Program and the Changbaishan Yijiyou Mini Program.

Foreign visitors can book using a passport.

After purchasing the ticket, you normally enter with the electronic QR code connected to your passport information. There is no need to exchange it for a paper ticket.

Recent foreign visitor reports also indicate that international passports can be used at the entrance gates.

When are tickets released?

Tickets can generally be booked up to seven days in advance.

New inventory is released at around 18:00, with returned tickets appearing later.

During ordinary weeks this may not matter much.

During Chinese school holidays, summer weekends and major national holidays, it does.

Changbaishan has reached its maximum daily reservation capacity during peak summer dates, so do not assume you can always buy a ticket the night before.

Booking From Outside China

This is one of the few parts of the trip that can still be awkward.

Foreign phone numbers can be used with the mini program, but some travelers have reported blank pages or errors when trying to access it from overseas networks.

There is no official statement saying overseas access is blocked.

It simply does not seem to work consistently for everyone.

If you run into problems, try again after arriving in China rather than assuming foreigners cannot book.

It is also worth setting up WeChat and a payment method before the trip.

Should You Buy Tickets Through Trip.com?

I would use the official booking system for the scenic-area ticket.

Changbaishan’s current official guidance directs visitors to its own mini programs and does not treat third-party platforms as official ticket channels.

Trip.com is very useful for hotels, trains and general travel planning.

For the mountain ticket itself, booking directly removes one extra layer of uncertainty.

Best Time to Visit Changbaishan

My First Choice: Early to Mid-September

If I were planning a first trip, I would aim for roughly:

September 1–20

By then, the main summer holiday crowds have started to ease.

Temperatures are still reasonable, the scenic areas are normally fully operational and you avoid some of the pressure of July and August.

You should still bring warm clothing.

Conditions at Heaven Lake can be much colder and windier than they are down in Erdaobaihe.

For the overall combination of weather, crowds and accessibility, early September is the period I would pick.

Second Choice: Mid-June to Early July

This is a good period if you like greener mountain scenery and alpine flowers.

Crowds are generally lighter than in the heart of summer.

The trade-off is cooler weather and a real possibility of fog around Heaven Lake.

For travelers who do not mind a little uncertainty, it can be a very pleasant time to visit.

July and August

July and August are the busiest months.

They are also part of the wetter summer period.

That means more people, greater pressure on tickets and accommodation, and plenty of fast-changing mountain weather.

There is nothing wrong with visiting in summer if that is when your trip falls.

Just book early.

Late Autumn

The mountain moves into winter quickly.

By late September and October, snow can already appear at higher elevations.

Autumn colors can be beautiful, but the best window is short and difficult to predict precisely.

I would not choose Changbaishan solely to chase peak foliage unless your schedule is flexible.

Winter

Winter is worth considering for entirely different reasons.

This is the season for:

  • deep snow

  • frozen waterfalls

  • hot springs

  • skiing

  • snowy forest landscapes

If you want to ski, stay around Wanda Resort.

If you are more interested in winter scenery and hot springs around the North Slope, Erdaobaihe is the better base.

Do not plan a winter trip around a guaranteed Heaven Lake visit.

Strong wind, snow and icy road conditions can close summit access.

On the West Slope, winter summit transport may also operate differently, including the use of snowmobiles.

Heaven Lake and the Weather

Heaven Lake is the reason most people come to Changbaishan, and it is also the least predictable part of the trip.

The summit sits high enough to have its own weather.

Fog can obscure the lake, and strong winds, heavy snow or icy roads can temporarily close the summit road.

You may still be able to visit the rest of the scenic area when this happens.

There is no useful way to guarantee a clear view months in advance.

That is the main reason I recommend allowing two days if Heaven Lake is important to you.

Check the official scenic-area notice on the morning of your visit.

If the summit is open and the weather looks good, I would go to Heaven Lake first rather than saving it until late in the day.

How Difficult Is Changbaishan?

North Slope: Easy

The North Slope involves walking, but very little serious climbing.

Vehicles handle most of the elevation gain.

A person with normal mobility should find it straightforward.

West Slope: Moderate

The West Slope requires the 1,442-step climb to the Heaven Lake viewpoint.

It is not a technical hike.

The altitude and weather simply make it more demanding than an ordinary staircase.

Good shoes help.

If you have knee problems or limited mobility, the North Slope is a much better choice.

Payments

For most foreign travelers, Alipay and WeChat Pay are the easiest ways to pay.

Both can be linked to international bank cards.

Chibei District, including the Erdaobaihe area, has also developed payment facilities specifically for international visitors, with foreign-card acceptance and ATMs supporting overseas cards.

You should be able to manage most of the trip without much cash.

I would still carry a small amount of RMB as backup.

Getting Around

Erdaobaihe has taxis and local buses.

DiDi is another useful option and offers an English-language interface.

Around the more remote western side of Changbaishan, transport can be less predictable, so hotel transfers or pre-arranged transport can be useful.

Always save important destinations in Chinese.

For example:

长白山站 — Changbaishan Railway Station
长白山西站 — Changbaishan West Railway Station
长白山北景区 — North Scenic Area
长白山西景区 — West Scenic Area

Showing the Chinese name is often easier than trying to explain the English translation to a driver.

English Signs

There is English signage inside Changbaishan.

The quality varies.

The scenic area has corrected translation mistakes in recent years, but occasional errors still appear.

This is rarely a serious problem.

The sightseeing routes are highly organized, and staff deal with very large numbers of visitors every day.

For important transport connections, keep the Chinese name of your destination on your phone.

Common Mistakes

Booking accommodation before choosing a slope

This is probably the easiest mistake to avoid.

North Slope: Erdaobaihe

West Slope: Songjianghe or Wanda

Choose the mountain route first.

Thinking North and West are close together

They are roughly 100 km apart at the scenic-area level.

Treat them as separate trips.

Using old ticket information

The former multi-day, multi-slope ticket policy no longer applies.

You need separate bookings.

Assuming Heaven Lake will definitely be visible

A valid ticket gets you into the scenic area.

It does not guarantee clear weather at the crater.

Leaving the West Slope until late in the day

The West Scenic Area currently operates on relatively early hours.

Start in the morning and give yourself enough time for the staircase.

Underestimating the West Slope climb

The 1,442 steps are manageable for most healthy adults.

They are still 1,442 steps at altitude.

Looking for a cable car to Heaven Lake

There isn’t one.

The North Slope uses mountain vehicles.

The West Slope ends with the staircase.

Cable cars at Wanda Resort belong to the resort and ski area.

Flying to Changbaishan Airport for a North Slope visit without checking the transfer

The airport is on the western side of the mountain.

For a North Slope itinerary, Changbaishan Railway Station is usually positioned much more conveniently.

A Simple First-Time Itinerary

This is the plan I would recommend to a friend visiting Changbaishan for the first time.

Day 0: Arrive in Erdaobaihe

Take the train to Changbaishan Railway Station.

Check into a hotel in Erdaobaihe.

Have dinner, prepare warm clothes and check the next day’s weather and official scenic-area notice.

Day 1: North Slope

Start early.

Visit Heaven Lake first if summit access is open.

Continue with:

  • Changbai Waterfall

  • the geothermal spring area

  • Green Deep Pool

  • the forest area if you still have time

Return to Erdaobaihe in the afternoon or early evening.

Day 2: Keep It Flexible

If you did not see Heaven Lake on Day 1, check the summit conditions again.

If you already had a clear view, there is no need to repeat the mountain.

Use the day for a hot spring, a relaxed morning or onward travel.

Keeping this day flexible makes the whole Changbaishan trip less stressful.

Is Changbaishan Worth Visiting?

Changbaishan is worth the trip if Heaven Lake, volcanic scenery and the landscapes of northeastern China appeal to you.

It is especially rewarding for travelers who have already seen some of China’s better-known cultural and mountain destinations and want something different.

The main uncertainty is the weather.

You may arrive on a perfect morning and see the entire crater clearly. You may also reach the mountain on a day when the summit is hidden in fog or temporarily closed.

A good Changbaishan itinerary leaves room for that uncertainty.

For a first visit, keep the plan simple:

Stay in Erdaobaihe, visit the North Slope, allow two days if possible, and aim for early September.

That gives you the best balance of scenery, convenience and flexibility.
