Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Travel Guide: Tickets, Cable Cars, Altitude and Best Routes

A practical Jade Dragon Snow Mountain travel guide for foreign visitors, covering cable car tickets, passport rules, altitude sickness, Blue Moon Valley, weather risks, transport from Lijiang and the best routes for first-time travelers.

On this page

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is one of the easiest ways to experience a high-altitude snow mountain in China.

But it is also one of the easiest places to misunderstand.

You do not really “climb” Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. For normal visitors, this is not a mountaineering trip. It is a cable car and sightseeing experience near Lijiang, with glacier views, high-altitude boardwalks, blue lakes, alpine meadows and very changeable weather.

The highest point ordinary tourists can reach is the 4,680-meter viewing platform in Glacier Park. You get close to it by taking the Glacier Park Cableway to 4,506 meters, then walking up a wooden boardwalk.

That is already high enough to take seriously.

This guide explains how Jade Dragon Snow Mountain actually works: which cable car to choose, how tickets work for foreign visitors, how serious the altitude is, when to go, what Blue Moon Valley is, and which route makes sense for your trip.

Quick Answer

For most foreign visitors, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is worth visiting if you are already in Lijiang and want a dramatic high-altitude day trip.

The classic first-time route is:

Lijiang → Glacier Park Cableway → 4,680m viewing platform → Blue Moon Valley → Lijiang

But this is not the best route for everyone.

If you are worried about altitude sickness, traveling with young children or older family members, or unable to get Glacier Park Cableway tickets, choose:

Spruce Meadow + Blue Moon Valley

If you prefer open grassland views and fewer crowds, choose:

Yak Meadow + Blue Moon Valley or Ganhaizi

The biggest planning issue is ticket booking. Glacier Park Cableway tickets are limited and sell out quickly in peak season. Foreign travelers should prepare early, especially if they need help using the official WeChat mini program.

What Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Actually Is

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, also called Yulong Snow Mountain, rises just north of Lijiang in Yunnan Province.

Its main peak, Shanzidou, reaches 5,596 meters and remains unclimbed. That peak is not part of the tourist experience.

What tourists visit is the developed scenic area below the main peak. The experience is built around cable cars, shuttle buses, viewing platforms, lakes and meadows.

So the right way to describe the trip is not:

“I climbed Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.”

A more accurate description is:

“I took the cable car up to Glacier Park and walked to the 4,680m viewing platform.”

This distinction matters. Visitors who expect a hiking challenge may be disappointed. Visitors who expect a simple sightseeing day with beautiful mountain scenery will understand the place much better.

The Three Cable Cars Explained

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain has three main cable cars. They go to different places. They are not interchangeable.

The clearest way to understand them is by destination.

Cable CarDestinationPriceBest For
Glacier Park CablewayGlacier ParkRMB 140, including round-trip cable car and scenic shuttleThe classic high-altitude experience
Spruce Meadow CablewaySpruce MeadowRMB 60Lower altitude, families, easy route
Yak Meadow CablewayYak MeadowRMB 65Open meadow views, fewer crowds

Some English sources use “big cable car,” “middle cable car” and “small cable car,” but this can be confusing. It is better to use the destination names: Glacier Park, Spruce Meadow and Yak Meadow.

Glacier Park Cableway

This is the most famous option.

It takes you from around 3,356 meters to the upper station at 4,506 meters. From there, you can walk along the boardwalk to the 4,680-meter viewing platform.

This is the route most visitors imagine when they think of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.

It is also the hardest ticket to get.

Spruce Meadow Cableway

Spruce Meadow is much lower and easier.

It is a good choice if you are worried about altitude, traveling with children or older visitors, or unable to get Glacier Park tickets.

The scenery is softer: forest, meadow and mountain backdrop rather than dramatic high-altitude glacier platforms.

Yak Meadow Cableway

Yak Meadow Cableway descending at Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

Yak Meadow sits higher than Spruce Meadow but lower than Glacier Park.

It is more open, less crowded and better for wide landscape photography. It is a strong alternative if you want mountain views without fighting for the most popular cable car.

Can You Visit More Than One Cable Car Area in One Day?

Sometimes, but do not overpack the day.

CombinationWorks?Comment
Glacier Park + Blue Moon ValleyYesThe classic one-day route
Glacier Park + Spruce Meadow or Yak Meadow + Blue Moon ValleyPossible but rushedOnly if you start early and already have tickets
All three cable carsNoNot worth the time, transfers and altitude stress
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain + Baisha Ancient TownYesA good afternoon add-on
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain + Tiger Leaping GorgeNoThey deserve separate days

For a first visit, choose one cable car area and pair it with Blue Moon Valley.

That is enough.

Tickets and Booking for Foreign Visitors

Ticketing is the most important part of a Jade Dragon Snow Mountain trip.

There are two separate things to understand:

  1. the mountain entrance fee;
  2. the cable car ticket.

Entrance Fee

The Jade Dragon Snow Mountain entrance fee is RMB 100 per person.

Foreign visitors buy this on site with a passport. Staff usually collect it when you enter the scenic area.

Cable Car Tickets

Cable car tickets are booked through the official WeChat mini program:

丽江旅游集团

The mini program is the official booking channel for Jade Dragon Snow Mountain cable cars and Impression Lijiang tickets.

The key challenge for foreign travelers is not the mountain itself. It is the booking process.

To use the official system smoothly, you need:

  • a WeChat account;
  • a Chinese mainland mobile number that can receive SMS;
  • WeChat Pay;
  • passport information added for each traveler.

This is where many foreign visitors get stuck.

If you cannot use the official mini program, the easier options are:

  • book through Trip.com or Klook;
  • ask your hotel or guesthouse to help;
  • join a reliable day tour.

These options may cost more, but they are often simpler for visitors who do not speak Chinese or do not have a Chinese mobile number.

Ticket Release Times

Current ticket release rules:

TicketAdvance SaleRelease Time
Glacier Park Cableway7 days ahead20:00
Spruce Meadow Cableway7 days ahead21:00
Yak Meadow Cableway7 days ahead21:00

In peak season, Glacier Park Cableway tickets sell out quickly. If Glacier Park is your priority, book as soon as tickets are released.

Passport Requirement

Bring your original passport.

This is not optional for foreign visitors. Tickets are real-name tickets, and passport checks are used for entry, shuttle buses and cable car access.

A photo of your passport is not a safe substitute.

Getting to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain from Lijiang

Most visitors start from Lijiang Old Town, Shuhe or Baisha.

From Lijiang Old Town

TransportTimeCostComment
Bus 101Around 1 hourRMB 15Budget option, often from Zhongyi Market
Taxi / Didi30–40 minutesAround RMB 80–100 one wayFlexible, but return rides can be harder in peak season
Private carVariesAround RMB 200–300 round tripGood for early starts and flexible routes
Day tourVariesAround RMB 250–600Easiest if tickets and transport are included

If you are going independently, set your destination carefully. For most visitors, the practical destination is the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Visitor Center or Ganhaizi area, not the cable car upper station.

Private cars and taxis cannot drive you directly to every scenic spot. Inside the scenic area, you use official shuttle buses or scenic transport.

Return Tip

In peak season, getting a taxi back to Lijiang after 4–5 pm can be slow. If you want a smoother day, arrange a round-trip car or confirm your return plan in advance.

Altitude Sickness: The Real Numbers

Altitude is the main health issue at Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.

Here are the important numbers:

PlaceAltitude
Lijiang Old TownAround 2,410m
Ganhaizi / Blue Moon ValleyAround 3,100m
Spruce MeadowAround 3,240m
Yak MeadowAround 3,700–3,800m
Glacier Park Cableway upper station4,506m
Highest tourist viewing platform4,680m
Shanzidou main peak5,596m, not open to tourists

The jump from Lijiang to Glacier Park is serious. Many visitors feel mild symptoms such as headache, shortness of breath or fatigue.

Most healthy travelers can visit if they move slowly and avoid overexertion. But Glacier Park is not suitable for everyone.

Travelers who should be cautious include:

  • pregnant travelers;
  • people with heart disease;
  • people with serious high blood pressure;
  • people with respiratory disease;
  • travelers with a bad cold;
  • anyone very sensitive to altitude.

If you are concerned, choose Spruce Meadow instead of Glacier Park.

Oxygen and Warm Clothes

Many visitors buy oxygen in Lijiang before the trip. It is usually cheaper in town than inside the scenic area.

Warm clothing matters, especially in winter or windy weather. You can rent a coat near the mountain, but bringing your own layers is usually better.

Should You Go on Your First Day in Lijiang?

It is better not to.

Lijiang is already around 2,400 meters above sea level. If your schedule allows, spend one night in Lijiang before going up to Glacier Park. Put Jade Dragon Snow Mountain on your second or third day.

Best Time to Visit Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

The best season depends on what you want.

GoalBest TimeWhy
Snow sceneryNovember to MarchBetter chance of visible snow
Clear mountain viewsSeptember to NovemberMore stable weather and clearer skies
Fewer crowdsWinter, outside holidaysLower visitor numbers
Best overall experienceSeptember to NovemberGood visibility and comfortable weather

Is There Snow in Summer?

Do not expect a snowy mountain experience in summer.

From around May, snow begins to melt. By July, the upper cable car area often has little or no visible snow. Summer visitors should focus on mountain views, Blue Moon Valley and meadows rather than snow.

Weather Risk

Weather can change the whole experience.

Rainy season is usually from June to August. Clouds and mist can completely block the main peak. Afternoon showers are common.

Cable cars can also close due to wind, snow, ice or storms. The Glacier Park and Yak Meadow cableways are especially affected by wind.

Even if you booked tickets in advance, same-day cancellation is possible.

Best Time of Day

Morning is better.

Clouds often build later in the day, so start early. If seeing the mountain clearly matters to you, aim to reach the scenic area early rather than treating it as a lazy afternoon trip.

Blue Moon Valley

Blue Moon Valley is inside the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain scenic area.

It does not require a separate entrance ticket, but you still need to pay the main mountain entrance fee.

The valley is famous for its blue-green pools and white riverbed. The water comes from snow mountain meltwater and flows through a landscape of pale limestone and marble-like stones.

The color changes with weather.

On sunny days, the water can look intensely blue. On cloudy or rainy days, it can look much paler. Many online photos are heavily edited, so keep expectations realistic.

The electric cart inside Blue Moon Valley is optional. Walking gives a better experience for most visitors.

Blue Moon Valley pairs very well with Glacier Park, Spruce Meadow or Yak Meadow. It is the easiest part of the mountain day and a good backup if the weather is not ideal.

The 3 Best Routes for Foreign Visitors

Route 1: Classic One-Day Route

Lijiang → Glacier Park → 4,680m platform → Blue Moon Valley → Lijiang

This is the standard first-time route.

Choose this if:

  • you want the classic Jade Dragon Snow Mountain experience;
  • you can get Glacier Park Cableway tickets;
  • you are comfortable with high altitude;
  • you only have one day.

Do not choose this if:

  • you are very worried about altitude sickness;
  • you are traveling with young children or frail older visitors;
  • the weather forecast is poor;
  • the cableway is closed.

Difficulty: moderate, mainly because of altitude.
Altitude risk: medium to high.
Ticket pressure: high. Book early.

If the weather is bad, replace Glacier Park with Spruce Meadow or Yak Meadow.

Route 2: Easy Low-Altitude Route

Lijiang → Spruce Meadow → Blue Moon Valley → Baisha or Shuhe

This is the safer and more relaxed route.

Choose this if:

  • you are worried about altitude;
  • you are traveling with children or older family members;
  • you could not get Glacier Park tickets;
  • you prefer forest and meadow scenery.

Difficulty: low.
Altitude risk: low.
Ticket pressure: much lower than Glacier Park.

This route is less dramatic, but often more enjoyable for travelers who do not want the stress of 4,680 meters.

Route 3: Photography and Meadow Route

Lijiang → Yak Meadow → Blue Moon Valley or Ganhaizi → Lijiang

This route is for travelers who prefer open landscapes.

Choose this if:

  • you like wide grassland views;
  • you want fewer crowds;
  • you are interested in photography;
  • you do not need the highest platform experience.

Difficulty: low to moderate.
Altitude risk: moderate.
Ticket pressure: lower than Glacier Park.

Yak Meadow is more weather-dependent than Spruce Meadow because of its open views, but it can be beautiful when visibility is good.

Where to Stay Before Visiting

Most travelers stay in one of three places.

AreaBest ForComment
Lijiang Old TownFirst-time visitors, nightlife, restaurantsLively, convenient, but stone streets are annoying with luggage
Shuhe Old TownQuieter stay with old-town atmosphereA good balance between comfort and calm
Baisha Ancient TownCloser to the mountain, quieter, village feelGood for views and slow travel, less nightlife

For most first-time visitors, Lijiang Old Town or Shuhe is easiest.

Baisha is excellent if you want a quieter stay and plan to combine it with Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.

How to Fit It into a Lijiang Trip

Do not visit Glacier Park immediately after arriving from low altitude if you can avoid it.

A better plan:

2 Days in Lijiang

Day 1: Arrive, walk around Lijiang, adjust to altitude
Day 2: Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

3 Days in Lijiang

Day 1: Arrive and adjust
Day 2: Jade Dragon Snow Mountain
Day 3: Baisha, Shuhe or slow old-town day

4 Days in Lijiang

Day 1: Lijiang Old Town
Day 2: Jade Dragon Snow Mountain
Day 3: Baisha and Shuhe
Day 4: A nearby destination such as Shaxi, depending on your larger route

Do not combine Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Tiger Leaping Gorge on the same day. They are separate major trips.

Common Mistakes

1. Thinking It Is a Real Climb

For tourists, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is a cable car and viewing platform experience. Do not plan it like a hiking summit.

2. Not Booking Glacier Park Tickets Early

The Glacier Park Cableway is the hardest ticket to get. In peak season, book as soon as tickets are released.

3. Forgetting Your Passport

Foreign visitors need the original passport for real-name ticket checks.

4. Underestimating Altitude

4,680 meters is high. Move slowly and do not treat the boardwalk like a fitness challenge.

5. Expecting Snow in Summer

Summer is not the best time for snow scenery. Manage expectations.

6. Ignoring Weather

A cloudy day can hide the entire mountain. A windy day can close cableways.

7. Choosing the Wrong Cable Car

Glacier Park, Spruce Meadow and Yak Meadow are different experiences. Do not buy based only on the words “big,” “middle” or “small” cable car.

8. Joining a Suspiciously Cheap Tour

Very cheap tours may include shopping stops or pressure to buy oxygen, coats or local products. Choose carefully.

9. Thinking Blue Moon Valley Is Completely Free

Blue Moon Valley has no separate ticket, but you still need to pay the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain entrance fee.

Final Advice

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is worth visiting, but only if you understand what kind of place it is.

It is not a summit climb. It is not a guaranteed snow experience. It is not a place where you can simply show up in peak season and expect the best cable car ticket.

The best visit is planned around three things:

ticket availability, altitude, and weather.

If you get Glacier Park tickets, the weather is clear, and you are comfortable with altitude, the classic route is excellent.

If not, do not force it.

Spruce Meadow, Yak Meadow and Blue Moon Valley can still make a very good day. For many travelers, a lower-stress route is better than chasing 4,680 meters in bad conditions.

Go early, bring your passport, book the right cable car, and keep your expectations realistic. That is the difference between a frustrating Jade Dragon Snow Mountain trip and a memorable one.

FAQ

Can foreigners buy Jade Dragon Snow Mountain tickets online?

Yes. Cable car tickets can be booked through the official WeChat mini program, but foreign visitors may have trouble if they do not have a Chinese mobile number or WeChat Pay. Trip.com, Klook, hotels and reliable tours are easier alternatives.

Do I need my passport?

Yes. Bring your original passport. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain uses real-name ticket checks.

Is Jade Dragon Snow Mountain actually a mountain you climb?

No. Normal visitors do not climb the mountain. They take cable cars and walk on designated boardwalks or paths.

How high can tourists go?

Tourists can take the Glacier Park Cableway to 4,506 meters and walk to the 4,680-meter viewing platform.

Will I get altitude sickness?

Many visitors feel mild symptoms at Glacier Park. Move slowly, avoid alcohol before the trip, and choose Spruce Meadow if you are worried.

Which cable car should I choose?

Choose Glacier Park for the classic high-altitude experience, Spruce Meadow for an easier lower-altitude visit, and Yak Meadow for open grassland views and fewer crowds.

Is Blue Moon Valley free?
