Yandang Mountain Travel Guide: Lingfeng Night View, Lingyan Flying Crossing and Dalongqiu Waterfall

A practical Yandang Mountain guide for foreign visitors: best routes, Lingfeng Night View, Lingyan Flying Crossing, Dalongqiu Waterfall, transport from Wenzhou, Hangzhou and Shanghai, ticket prices, passport notes and where to stay.

On this page
Strange peaks of Yandang Mountain seen from Dongjia Village
Yandang Mountain is known for sharp volcanic peaks and unusual rock formations in southeast Zhejiang.

Is Yandang Mountain Worth Visiting?

Yes, especially if you want a less internationalized Chinese mountain experience with unusual rock shapes, night scenery and waterfalls.

Yandang Mountain is worth visiting if you are interested in:

  • strange volcanic peaks and cliffs;
  • a quieter alternative to Huangshan and Zhangjiajie;
  • Lingfeng Night View, a rare night walk based on rock silhouettes;
  • Lingyan Flying Crossing, a dramatic cliff performance;
  • Dalongqiu Waterfall, one of Yandang’s signature sights;
  • Chinese landscape culture and travel writing.

It is not the easiest mountain in China for first-time foreign visitors. The paths are not hard, but the planning can be confusing. You need to understand where to stay, how scenic buses work, when the night view starts and whether the Flying Crossing performance is running.

If you want simple English service everywhere, Huangshan or Zhangjiajie may be easier. If you want something more local and distinctive, Yandang Mountain is a strong choice.

Yandang Mountain, Wenzhou, Yueqing and Xianglingtou: What’s the Difference?

Yandang Mountain is in:

Zhejiang Province -> Wenzhou City -> Yueqing City -> Yandang Town -> Yandang Mountain Scenic Area

It is about 70 km from central Wenzhou. It is not inside Wenzhou city center.

Key names you need to know:

NameWhat It MeansWhy It Matters
Yandang Mountain / YandangshanThe mountain scenic destinationYour main travel target
North Yandang MountainThe main tourist areaThis guide refers to North Yandang
Yandangshan Railway StationHigh-speed rail stationAbout 6 km from Xianglingtou
Wenzhou South Railway StationMajor rail hubAbout 20 minutes by train from Yandangshan Station
YueqingCounty-level cityNot the same as the scenic core
XianglingtouTourist service villageBest base for most visitors
Tourist Distribution CenterBus and ticket hubUseful for scenic transport
LingfengCore scenic areaDay view and night view
LingyanCore scenic areaFlying Crossing performance
DalongqiuCore scenic areaFamous waterfall

Common mistakes:

  1. Thinking Yandangshan Railway Station is the scenic entrance.
  2. Buying a ticket to Wenzhou South and thinking you are already at the mountain.
  3. Staying in Yueqing city when you actually want the scenic core.
  4. Not knowing that Xianglingtou is the best practical base.
  5. Confusing North Yandang Mountain with South or Middle Yandang Mountain.

For most foreign visitors, the simplest plan is:

Take the high-speed train to Yandangshan Railway Station, then transfer to Xianglingtou. Stay near Xianglingtou if you want to see Lingfeng Night View.

What Makes Yandang Mountain Special?

Yandang Mountain is not a high-altitude summit climb. Its charm is in unusual shapes.

The landscape was formed by ancient volcanic activity. Over time, the volcanic rock weathered into sharp peaks, cliffs, caves and strange stone forms. In Chinese landscape culture, these rocks are not only geological objects. They are given names based on what they resemble: joined palms, scissors, flags, eagles, lovers or mythical figures.

The traditional “Three Wonders of Yandang” are:

  • Lingfeng;
  • Lingyan;
  • Dalongqiu Waterfall.

This is why a first-time trip should focus on these three.

How Many Days Do You Need?

One Day: Best If You Have Limited Time

A one-day trip is possible, especially if you stay near Xianglingtou the night before.

Best one-day route:

Lingfeng Day View -> Dalongqiu Waterfall -> Lingfeng Night View

This route is low difficulty and covers the most distinctive first-time experiences. It does not include Lingyan Flying Crossing, but it gives you the clearest “Yandang Mountain identity” in one day.

Suggested schedule:

  • 08:30 – Lingfeng Day View
  • 11:00 – Lunch or rest near Xianglingtou
  • 13:00 – Dalongqiu Waterfall
  • 15:30 – Return to Xianglingtou
  • 18:00-18:40 onward – Lingfeng Night View
  • 21:00-21:30 – Return to hotel

Stay near Xianglingtou if you do this route. Returning to Wenzhou after the night view is not convenient unless you have private transport.

Two Days: Best Overall Choice

Two days is better for most foreign visitors.

Best two-day route:

Day 1

  • Lingfeng Day View
  • Dalongqiu Waterfall
  • Lingfeng Night View
  • Stay in Xianglingtou

Day 2

  • Lingyan Scenic Area
  • Lingyan Flying Crossing
  • Fangdong
  • Optional Sanzhe Waterfall if you have extra time

This is the most balanced version. You see Lingfeng by day and night, Dalongqiu Waterfall, Lingyan Flying Crossing and one cliffside scenic area without rushing too much.

Best Routes for First-Time Visitors

Route 1: Classic One-Day Route

Best for: first-time visitors with limited time
Difficulty: easy
Main sights: Lingfeng Day View, Dalongqiu Waterfall, Lingfeng Night View
Best base: Xianglingtou

This is the best route if you only have one day. Lingfeng Day View helps you understand the rocks; Dalongqiu gives you the waterfall experience; Lingfeng Night View shows the same rocks transformed by darkness, moonlight and storytelling.

It is suitable for elderly visitors, families and people with knee concerns because most paths are gentle.

The main downside is the long day and the waiting time before the night view.

Route 2: Classic Two-Day Route

Best for: most foreign visitors
Difficulty: easy to moderate
Main sights: Lingfeng, Dalongqiu, Lingyan, Fangdong

This is the route I recommend most.

Day 1 covers Lingfeng and Dalongqiu. Day 2 focuses on Lingyan and the Flying Crossing performance, then adds Fangdong if you want cliffside views.

The key is to check the Lingyan Flying Crossing schedule in advance. Performance times may vary by season, weekday and holiday.

Route 3: Photography and Rock-Shape Route

Best for: photographers, slow travelers, landscape lovers
Difficulty: easy to moderate
Main focus: Lingfeng, Lingyan, Dalongqiu after rain

This route spends more time at fewer places.

Recommended focus:

  • Lingfeng in late afternoon;
  • Lingfeng Night View with a guide;
  • Dalongqiu after rain;
  • Lingyan before or after the Flying Crossing performance;
  • Fangdong only if you want cliffside views.

Yandang Mountain is highly angle-dependent. The same rock can look ordinary from one place and dramatic from another. A local guide or experienced guesthouse owner can be useful for finding the best viewpoints.

Understanding Yandang Mountain Transport

This is where many visitors get confused.

Yandang Mountain is not one continuous walking route. It is more like several small gorge parks scattered across a valley. Each has its own entrance and ticket logic.

Approximate distances:

RouteDistanceDriving Time
Xianglingtou -> LingfengAbout 2 km5 min
Xianglingtou -> LingyanAbout 3 km7 min
Xianglingtou -> DalongqiuAbout 4-5 km10 min
Xianglingtou -> FangdongAbout 5-6 km12 min
Lingfeng -> LingyanAbout 2 km5 min
Lingyan -> DalongqiuAbout 2 km5 min

You cannot rely on walking between all scenic areas. The connections are roads, not scenic hiking trails.

Transport Options

Scenic shuttle bus: usually the best-value option. A 3-day shuttle pass has been listed at about ¥40. Routes and schedules should be checked before travel.

Taxi or ride-hailing: useful when bus timing is inconvenient. DiDi or Amap can work if your payment is set up.

Private car or hotel-arranged driver: easiest for foreign visitors who do not speak Chinese. More expensive, but saves time and confusion.

Walking between scenic areas: not recommended.

From Yandangshan Railway Station

Yandangshan Railway Station is not the entrance to the scenic area. After arrival, you still need to reach Xianglingtou or the Tourist Distribution Center.

Options include:

  • official scenic shuttle;
  • taxi;
  • ride-hailing car;
  • hotel pickup.

Walking is not practical.

After Lingfeng Night View

Lingfeng Night View may finish around 21:00-21:30. Scenic buses may be limited by then. This is why staying near Xianglingtou is strongly recommended.

How to Get to Yandang Mountain

Starting PointPractical RouteApproximate Time
Wenzhou South StationTrain to Yandangshan Station, then shuttle/taxiAbout 1 hour including transfer
Hangzhou East StationHigh-speed train to Yandangshan StationAbout 3 hours including transfer
Shanghai HongqiaoHigh-speed train to Yandangshan StationAbout 4 hours including transfer
Ningbo StationHigh-speed train to Yandangshan StationAbout 2 hours including transfer
Wenzhou AirportBus or taxi/private transferAbout 1.5 hours

From Wenzhou, a daytime trip is possible. If you want Lingfeng Night View, stay one night near Yandang Mountain.

From Hangzhou, stay one night.

From Shanghai, do not treat it as a day trip. It is too rushed.

Where to Stay

Xianglingtou

This is the best place for most first-time foreign visitors.

Stay here if you want:

  • easy access to Lingfeng Night View;
  • shorter transfers to Lingfeng, Lingyan and Dalongqiu;
  • restaurants, small hotels and local help;
  • less stress after night touring.

If you plan to see Lingfeng Night View, Xianglingtou is the best base.

Near Yandangshan Railway Station

Useful only if you arrive late or leave early. It is convenient for trains but not ideal for sightseeing.

Yueqing City

More city services, but farther from the scenic core. Not ideal for a first-time route.

Wenzhou City

Good if your main base is Wenzhou and you only plan a daytime visit. Not ideal if you want the night view.

Hotel Passport Note

Foreign visitors should confirm that their hotel accepts foreign passports. Some small guesthouses may only be used to Chinese ID registration. Booking through Trip.com or Booking.com is usually safer.

Passport and Payment Notes

Foreign visitors may find official Chinese ticket systems less convenient if they prioritize Chinese ID cards.

Practical options:

  • buy through Trip.com, Ctrip or Klook if available;
  • buy at the manual ticket window with your passport;
  • ask your hotel for help;
  • prepare extra time for manual passport entry.

For payment, prepare:

  • Alipay or WeChat Pay;
  • some RMB cash;
  • passport;
  • screenshots of Chinese place names and bookings.

Visa or Mastercard may not work reliably at small windows or local shops.

Lingfeng Day View: See It Before the Night View

Lingfeng is one of Yandang’s most important areas.

By day, you see rock formations such as joined palms, lovers, animals and symbolic shapes. These names are not random decoration. They are part of traditional Chinese landscape appreciation.

The important point:

Lingfeng Day View and Lingfeng Night View should be understood together.

By day, a rock may look like one thing. At night, from another angle and under moonlight or torchlight, it becomes something completely different.

Lingfeng Day View usually takes 2-2.5 hours. It is mostly easy walking with some steps.

Lingfeng Night View: Not a Normal Light Show

Lingfeng Night View is Yandang Mountain’s most unique experience.

But foreign visitors must understand what it is.

It is not a simple light show.

It is a guided night walk based on:

  • moonlight;
  • darkness;
  • rock silhouettes;
  • torchlight or guided pointing;
  • imagination;
  • old Chinese naming traditions.

During the walk, a guide points out how a rock becomes an eagle, a couple, a rabbit, a shepherd boy or another figure when seen from the right angle.

A useful explanation:

Lingfeng at night is a Rorschach test drawn in stone. What looks like a blunt cliff by day may become an eagle spreading its wings or a pair of lovers embracing at night.

Do You Need a Guide?

Yes, strongly recommended.

Most commentary is in Chinese. English guides may not always be available, so consider:

  • booking an English-speaking local guide in advance;
  • asking your guesthouse in Xianglingtou for help;
  • joining a Chinese group and using a translation app;
  • reading about the major rock shapes before going.

Without explanation, some foreign visitors may feel they are just walking in the dark looking at rocks.

Weather and Timing

Lingfeng Night View is best with decent visibility. Heavy rain or thick fog can ruin the experience. Moonlight can make the silhouettes clearer.

Night opening times may change by season, so check before going.

Scissor Peak rock formation in Yandang Mountain
Scissor Peak is one of the most recognizable standalone rock formations in the Dalongqiu Scenic Area. Seen from the front, the summit has been eroded into two pointed spires with a clear split between them, making it look like an opened pair of scissors.

Lingyan Scenic Area and Lingyan Flying Crossing

Lingyan is one of the classic scenic areas of Yandang Mountain. It is known for large cliff walls, caves, temple scenery and the famous Lingyan Flying Crossing performance.

The Flying Crossing takes place between high cliff peaks and is one of the most visual experiences in Yandang Mountain. It developed from local mountain skills originally used by villagers collecting medicinal herbs from cliffs. Today it is performed as a scenic-area show and recognized as part of Zhejiang’s intangible cultural heritage.

The performance is usually included in the Lingyan ticket and is not a separate ticket.

It is very suitable for foreign visitors because it is visual and does not require language understanding.

However, performance times can change. Bad weather such as strong wind or heavy rain may cancel the show. Check current show times before visiting.

Xu Xiake and Lingyan

Yandang Mountain is closely associated with Xu Xiake, one of China’s most famous historical travelers, geographers and travel writers. He visited Yandang more than once and wrote about the area in the tradition of Chinese landscape travel.

Near the entrance of Lingyan Scenic Area, a stone statue of Xu Xiake commemorates this connection. For foreign visitors, this detail shows that Yandang Mountain is not just a scenic park. It is part of China’s long tradition of observing, naming and writing about mountains.

Duxiu Peak in Lingyan Scenic Area, Yandang Mountain
Lingyan is one of Yandang Mountain’s classic scenic areas, known for cliffs, rock peaks, and the Flying Crossing performance.

Dalongqiu Waterfall: Spectacular, but Seasonal

Dalongqiu Waterfall is one of Yandang Mountain’s most famous sights. It is known for its very high single-drop fall and is often considered one of the great waterfalls of China.

But one warning is essential:

Dalongqiu changes dramatically with the season.

After summer rain or typhoon-related rainfall, Dalongqiu can be powerful, loud and spectacular. In dry spring or winter, the water may become much thinner. It can still be beautiful, but the experience is very different.

Best Time for Dalongqiu

SeasonWater FlowExperience
Summer after rain or typhoonStrongestMost dramatic
AutumnMedium to strongUsually good
Spring before heavy rainsLowerMisty and softer
WinterWeakestQuiet, but less impressive

The walk from the entrance to the waterfall is easy, mostly flat and usually takes about 20-30 minutes one way. A full visit takes about 1.5-2 hours.

Typhoon season can make the waterfall spectacular, but typhoons may also cause closures. Always check official notices.

A misty gorge landscape in Yandang Mountain
Yandang Mountain’s gorge unfolds in layered bands of mist, with steep rock walls enclosing a deep valley. A stream, pavilion and winding boardwalk sit below among the trees, giving the scene both dramatic scale and the quiet atmosphere of Jiangnan landscape painting.

Fangdong and Optional Areas

Fangdong is worth adding on a two-day route. It has cliffside walkways, suspended bridge sections and open views. It is more intense than Lingfeng or Dalongqiu and may not suit travelers with fear of heights.

Avoid Fangdong in heavy rain because cliffside paths can become slippery.

Sanzhe Waterfall is optional. It is quieter and more suitable for travelers who enjoy valley walks and photography.

For a first visit, do not over-plan. Focus on:

  1. Lingfeng;
  2. Dalongqiu;
  3. Lingyan;
  4. Fangdong if you have a second day.

How Difficult Is Yandang Mountain?

Yandang Mountain is much easier than Huangshan, Zhangjiajie, Wuyi Mountain or Lushan if you stick to the main scenic areas.

AreaDifficultyNotes
Lingfeng Day ViewEasyMostly flat with a few steps
Lingfeng Night ViewEasyFlat, but in darkness
LingyanEasy to moderateSome steps
DalongqiuEasyMostly flat walking
FangdongModerateCliffside walkways and height exposure
Sanzhe WaterfallModerateSome uphill sections

A one-day route may involve 8-12 km of walking across the day. It is comfortable for most adults and much less punishing than Huangshan.

You do not need hiking boots or trekking poles for the main areas. Comfortable sports shoes are enough. In rainy weather, wear shoes with good grip.

Best Time to Visit Yandang Mountain

The best seasons are:

April-June and September-November

Spring

Green and misty. Rain is common. Dalongqiu may be softer before the wettest period.

Summer

Hot and humid. Waterfalls may be strongest after heavy rain or typhoon-related rainfall, but storms can affect access.

Autumn

Usually the best overall season. Weather is comfortable, water flow can still be good, and Lingfeng Night View may have clear moonlit conditions.

Winter

Quiet and less crowded, but Dalongqiu water flow is usually weakest. Lingfeng Night View can be clear but cold.

Avoid major Chinese holidays such as May Day, National Day Golden Week and peak summer holiday periods if possible.

Cultural Background: Xu Xiake, Rock Names and Landscape Imagination

Yandang Mountain is not mainly a religious mountain, although it has Buddhist sites such as Guanyin Cave and Lingyan Temple. Its deeper cultural value lies in landscape appreciation.

Three things help foreign visitors understand it:

  1. Xu Xiake and travel writing
    Xu Xiake, one of China’s most famous historical travelers, is closely associated with Yandang Mountain. His connection places Yandang in the long tradition of Chinese mountain travel and geographical observation.

  2. Rock names
    In Chinese landscape culture, peaks and rocks are often named based on what they resemble. This is why you see names like joined palms, scissors and flags.

  3. Lingfeng Night View
    The night view is the strongest example of this tradition. The mountain becomes meaningful through angle, shadow, moonlight and imagination.

Without this context, Yandang may look like “just rocks.” With context, it becomes a landscape of stories.

Common Mistakes

1. Thinking Yandang Mountain is one single mountain

It is a cluster of separate scenic areas. You need transport between them.

2. Going to the wrong station

Yandangshan Railway Station is the useful station for the scenic area. Yueqing Station is not the same.

3. Staying too far away

If you want Lingfeng Night View, stay near Xianglingtou.

4. Seeing only Lingfeng Night View without the day view

The magic is in the transformation from day to night. Try to see both.

5. Expecting a normal light show

Lingfeng Night View is a guided rock-silhouette and imagination experience.

6. Missing Lingyan Flying Crossing

Performance times can change and weather can cancel the show. Check before going.

7. Expecting Dalongqiu to be powerful all year

Water flow is seasonal. Check recent conditions if the waterfall is a key reason for your trip.

8. Trying to visit too many scenic areas in one day

Transport time matters. Choose carefully.

9. Assuming English service is complete

Prepare Chinese names, screenshots and translation tools.

10. Not checking hotel passport acceptance

Confirm in advance if staying in a small guesthouse.

Ticket prices, Lingfeng Night View hours, immersive show times, Lingyan Flying Crossing schedule, scenic shuttle routes, combined ticket rules, foreign-passport booking channels and hotel policies may change. Verify key details through official scenic-area channels, your hotel or a trusted travel provider before visiting.
