Mount Emei Travel Guide: Golden Summit, Monkeys, Tickets and Best Routes

A practical Mount Emei guide for foreign visitors: how to reach Golden Summit, how the shuttle bus and cable cars work, monkey safety, where to stay, tickets, transport from Chengdu and Leshan, and how to combine Mount Emei with the Leshan Giant Buddha.

On this page

Is Mount Emei Worth Visiting?

Yes. Mount Emei is one of the most rewarding mountain destinations in Sichuan because it combines Buddhist culture, high-altitude scenery, forest routes, and easy transport access from Chengdu.

It is especially worth visiting if you want:

  • Golden Summit at 3,079 meters;
  • the 48-meter golden Samantabhadra statue;
  • sunrise and cloud sea views;
  • Buddhist temples and living religious spaces;
  • forest walking routes around Qingyin Pavilion and Wannian Temple;
  • a chance to see the famous Mount Emei monkeys;
  • a natural pairing with the Leshan Giant Buddha.

Mount Emei is different from Huangshan or Zhangjiajie. It is not only a scenic mountain. It is also a major Buddhist pilgrimage site. If you understand both sides — the summit scenery and the Buddhist setting — the trip becomes much more meaningful.

Mount Emei, Emeishan City, and Leshan: What’s the Difference?

Several place names can confuse first-time visitors.

NameWhat It Means
Mount Emei / EmeishanThe mountain and scenic area
Emeishan CityThe city near the mountain, under Leshan jurisdiction
Emeishan StationThe high-speed rail station most visitors should use
Emei StationAn older railway station farther from the scenic area; usually not recommended
Leshan StationHigh-speed rail station for visiting the Leshan Giant Buddha
Baoguo Temple Tourist CenterA major visitor center and gateway at the mountain foot
Huangwan Visitor CenterAnother important visitor center and transport gateway
LeidongpingHigh-altitude shuttle bus terminal, around 2,400 meters
Jieyin HallThe place near Leidongping where visitors take the Golden Summit cable car
Golden Summit / JindingThe main summit area, 3,079 meters

The biggest mistake is buying a ticket to Emei Station instead of Emeishan Station. For most foreign travelers, Emeishan Station is the practical high-speed rail stop.

Also remember:

Mount Emei and the Leshan Giant Buddha are not in the same place. They are often combined, but they are separate destinations.

How Many Days Do You Need?

One Day

A one-day Golden Summit trip from Chengdu is possible, but it is tight. You need an early start, smooth transfers, and a simple plan. Do not combine too many low-mountain temples or the Leshan Giant Buddha on the same day.

Two Days

Two days is the best balance for most visitors. You can see the lower mountain temples and monkey area on Day 1, then go to Golden Summit on Day 2.

Three Days

Three days is best if you want a relaxed Mount Emei + Leshan Giant Buddha trip, or if you want to spend more time walking in the lower mountain forest areas.

Best Routes for First-Time Visitors

Route 1: Classic One-Day Golden Summit Route

Best for: first-time visitors with limited time
Difficulty: easy to moderate
Transport: high-speed rail, scenic shuttle bus, cable car
Main sights: Leidongping, Jieyin Hall, Golden Summit, Samantabhadra statue

A realistic one-day plan:

  1. Take an early high-speed train from Chengdu to Emeishan Station.
  2. Transfer to Baoguo Temple or Huangwan Visitor Center.
  3. Buy or verify your ticket and scenic shuttle bus access.
  4. Take the shuttle bus to Leidongping.
  5. Walk about 1.5 km to Jieyin Hall.
  6. Take the Golden Summit cable car.
  7. Visit Golden Summit, the Samantabhadra statue, and Huazang Temple.
  8. Return by cable car and shuttle bus.

This is the simplest route for first-time visitors. It avoids the long lower mountain hike and focuses on the most famous part of Mount Emei.

The weakness is time pressure. The shuttle ride is long, and crowds or weather can reduce your time at the summit.

Do not try to combine this with the Leshan Giant Buddha on the same day unless you are on a very aggressive tour schedule.

Route 2: Classic Two-Day Route — Best Overall Choice

Best for: travelers who want both temples and Golden Summit
Difficulty: moderate
Main idea: lower mountain on Day 1, Golden Summit on Day 2

Day 1: Lower Mountain

  • Baoguo Temple or Huangwan Visitor Center
  • Fuhu Temple, if time allows
  • Shuttle to Wuxiangang
  • Walk to Qingyin Pavilion
  • Visit One-Line Sky and the monkey area if you want to see monkeys
  • Stay near Baoguo Temple, Emeishan City, or a convenient scenic area hotel

Day 2: High Mountain

  • Early shuttle bus to Leidongping
  • Walk to Jieyin Hall
  • Cable car to Golden Summit
  • Visit Golden Summit and return

This route is the best balance for most foreign travelers. You see the Buddhist and forest side of Mount Emei, but you do not force yourself into a difficult multi-day climb.

Route 3: Mount Emei + Leshan Giant Buddha

Mount Emei and the Leshan Giant Buddha are one of the best two- or three-day combinations from Chengdu.

Tight two-day plan:

DayPlan
Day 1Chengdu → Leshan Giant Buddha → stay near Mount Emei
Day 2Mount Emei Golden Summit route → return to Chengdu

Better three-day plan:

DayPlan
Day 1Chengdu → Mount Emei lower mountain → stay near Baoguo Temple
Day 2Golden Summit full day
Day 3Leshan Giant Buddha → return to Chengdu

If you care about comfort, choose three days. The two-day version works, but it can feel rushed.

Route 4: Hiking Route for Experienced Walkers

Mount Emei can be climbed on foot, but this is not recommended for ordinary first-time visitors.

A classic long hiking route may include:

Baoguo Temple → Fuhu Temple → Qingyin Pavilion → Monkey Area → Hongchunping → Xixiangchi → Leidongping → Golden Summit

This can take 2–3 days and involves long stairs, a large elevation gain, and changing weather. It is rewarding for serious hikers, but it is not the easiest way to experience Mount Emei.

How the Scenic Shuttle Bus and Cable Cars Work

Mount Emei’s transport system is the key to understanding the trip.

The normal Golden Summit route works like this:

  1. Arrive at Baoguo Temple or Huangwan Visitor Center.
  2. Take the scenic shuttle bus toward Leidongping.
  3. Walk from Leidongping to Jieyin Hall.
  4. Take the Golden Summit cable car.
  5. Walk around the Golden Summit area.
  6. Return the same way.

The shuttle bus ride from the lower visitor area to Leidongping is long, often around two hours. It follows mountain roads with many turns, so travelers prone to motion sickness should prepare.

The scenic shuttle bus and cable car are separate systems. Buying one does not mean you have the other.

Mount Emei scenic area in Sichuan
Mount Emei combines Buddhist sites, forest routes, and high mountain scenery.

A useful way to explain Mount Emei:

Without the shuttle buses and cable cars, Mount Emei is like trying to climb from a base town to a 3,000-meter summit. The transport system is not a luxury; it is how ordinary visitors make the mountain realistic.

How to Reach Golden Summit

Golden Summit is the main goal for most visitors.

The standard route is:

Visitor Center → shuttle bus to Leidongping → walk to Jieyin Hall → cable car to Golden Summit

From Leidongping, you still need to walk about 1.5 km to Jieyin Hall. At high altitude, even this short walk can feel more tiring than expected.

The Golden Summit cable car ride itself is short, but you should still allow time for queues, especially during holidays, weekends, and peak seasons.

At the top, you can see:

  • the giant golden Samantabhadra statue;
  • Huazang Temple;
  • viewing platforms;
  • sunrise, if conditions are right;
  • cloud sea, if the weather allows;
  • distant snow mountain views on very clear days.

Weather is the biggest uncertainty. Golden Summit is often foggy. A perfect sunrise or cloud sea is never guaranteed.

A dramatic vista of Mount Emei’s Wanfo Summit rises above a billowing sea of clouds, with a solitary red pagoda perched on the rocky peak against a soft pastel sky at dusk or dawn. Sheer cliffs cloaked in dark green forest contrast with the ethereal mist filling the valleys far below.

Monkey Safety Guide

Mount Emei’s monkeys are famous, but they are wild animals, not pets. Treat this part of the trip as a safety issue, not a cute animal interaction.

Where you may see monkeys

Common monkey areas include:

  • the ecological monkey zone around the lower mountain forest route;
  • areas around Qingyin Pavilion and One-Line Sky;
  • sections between Leidongping and Jieyin Hall;
  • some higher mountain paths.

The exact places can vary. Do not assume monkeys are only in the official monkey area.

What monkeys may do

Mount Emei monkeys may:

  • grab food;
  • steal plastic bags;
  • pull at backpacks;
  • snatch bottles;
  • approach phones or cameras;
  • become aggressive if teased or challenged.

Rules for staying safe

  • Do not feed monkeys.
  • Do not hold food, plastic bags, or snacks in your hands.
  • Keep your backpack closed.
  • Put passports, phones, wallets, and cameras securely away.
  • Do not stare at monkeys aggressively.
  • Do not tease, touch, or block them.
  • Do not scream or run if they approach.
  • Stay with other visitors when possible.
  • Keep children close.
  • If a monkey steals something, do not fight it.

If you are scratched or bitten, wash the wound immediately with soap and running water, then seek medical help as soon as possible. Ask about rabies and tetanus treatment.

For most first-time foreign visitors, the monkey area is optional. If you go, go for observation — not interaction.

Best Things to See

Golden Summit

This is the must-see area of Mount Emei. The summit combines high mountain scenery, Buddhist symbolism, cloud views, and the famous Samantabhadra statue.

If you only have one day, make Golden Summit your priority.

Golden Summit area of Mount Emei
A magnificent golden statue of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva (十方普贤) crowns Mount Emei’s Golden Summit, featuring ten stacked bodhisattva faces rising to a jeweled spire, seated atop four sacred white elephants amid swirling clouds and a lotus base. The front face holds a ruyi scepter astride a six-tusked elephant, symbolizing the four wisdoms of Bodhi and the liberation of all sentient beings across the six realms.

Samantabhadra Statue

The 48-meter golden statue is one of the most recognizable sights on Mount Emei. It represents Samantabhadra, known in Chinese as Puxian Bodhisattva, who is closely associated with the mountain.

Huazang Temple

Located on Golden Summit, Huazang Temple is part of the mountain’s Buddhist identity and a key stop in the summit area.

Wannian Temple

Wannian Temple is one of the most important temples on Mount Emei. It is worth visiting if you have a two-day route or want to understand the religious side of the mountain.

Qingyin Pavilion

Qingyin Pavilion is one of the most pleasant lower mountain areas, known for streams, bridges, forest paths, and access toward the monkey area.

One-Line Sky and Monkey Area

These are good for travelers who want a forest walk and the chance to see monkeys. They are not essential for a one-day Golden Summit route.

Baoguo Temple and Fuhu Temple

These temples are near the lower mountain area. They are useful if you arrive the day before or want a softer introduction to Mount Emei.

Leshan Giant Buddha

Not inside Mount Emei, but often paired with it. The Leshan Giant Buddha is a separate UNESCO-related attraction and is one of the most famous Buddhist monuments in China.

How to Get to Mount Emei

From Chengdu

High-speed rail is the easiest option.

Most travelers depart from Chengdu East or Chengdu South and arrive at Emeishan Station. The ride is usually around one hour.

After arriving at Emeishan Station, transfer to Baoguo Temple / Huangwan Visitor Center by local bus, tourist shuttle, taxi, or ride-hailing.

Important:

Buy your train ticket to Emeishan Station, not Emei Station.

From Leshan

Leshan and Mount Emei are close enough to combine. You can transfer by bus, taxi, or rail depending on your exact route.

If you visit the Leshan Giant Buddha first, continue to Mount Emei and stay near the scenic area before doing the Golden Summit route the next day.

From Chongqing

A practical route is often Chongqing → Leshan by high-speed rail, then onward to Emeishan. Check the current rail schedule before planning.

Can you do Chengdu → Mount Emei → Chengdu in one day?

Yes, but it is a long day. Start early, focus only on Golden Summit, and do not add too many low-mountain sights.

Can you do Chengdu → Leshan Giant Buddha → Mount Emei → Chengdu in one day?

Not recommended. It is too rushed for independent foreign travelers.

Tickets, Passport, and Payment Notes

Current rules and prices can change, so verify before travel.

Common cost categories include:

  • Mount Emei scenic area entrance ticket;
  • scenic shuttle bus ticket;
  • Golden Summit cable car;
  • Wannian Temple cable car, if used;
  • small temple entrance tickets at some temples;
  • Leshan Giant Buddha ticket, if combining both destinations.

Foreign visitors should prepare:

  • original passport;
  • mobile payment through Alipay or WeChat Pay if possible;
  • some RMB cash as backup;
  • train ticket and hotel screenshots;
  • Chinese names of places such as Emeishan Station, Baoguo Temple, Leidongping, Jieyin Hall, and Golden Summit.

Trip.com and Klook may be easier for English booking and international payment. On-site ticket windows can usually handle passports, but queues may be long during holidays.

Mount Emei’s main entrance ticket is commonly valid for more than one day, but always confirm current rules before travel.

Where to Stay

Chengdu

Best if you only do a very early one-day trip. It has the best hotels and transport connections, but the day will be long.

Emeishan City

Good for general comfort and a wider choice of hotels. It is convenient if you arrive the night before.

Baoguo Temple / Visitor Center Area

Best for most two-day visitors. You are close to the scenic transport system and can start early.

Leidongping

Best if you want to be closer to Golden Summit for sunrise, but conditions may be simpler and prices higher.

Golden Summit Area

Best for sunrise and cloud sea chances, but usually the most expensive and hardest to book. Weather can still ruin sunrise plans, so do not expect a guaranteed view.

Always confirm that your hotel can accept foreign passports, especially if booking smaller local hotels.

How Hard Is Mount Emei?

Mount Emei can be easy, moderate, or very hard depending on your route.

Route TypeDifficulty
Golden Summit with shuttle bus + cable carEasy to moderate
Lower mountain + monkey areaModerate
Two-day scenic routeModerate
Full hike from base to summitHard
Multi-day stair climbVery hard

Even the “easy” route includes transfers, altitude, stairs, and walking. The path from Leidongping to Jieyin Hall is not long, but at around 2,400 meters it may feel tiring.

The full hike to Golden Summit is only for experienced walkers with time and stamina. Do not treat it as a casual day hike.

Wear non-slip shoes, especially in rain or winter.

Best Time to Visit

Autumn

Autumn is probably the best overall season. The weather is more stable, temperatures are comfortable, and visibility can be better.

Winter

Winter can be beautiful, especially for snow and clear summit views. But it is cold, icy, and not ideal for casual visitors unless they are prepared.

Spring

Spring can be misty and atmospheric, with flowers and forest scenery. Rain and fog are common.

Summer

Summer is green and cooler at altitude, but it is also crowded and often rainy. School holidays can make buses and cable cars busier.

For sunrise and cloud sea, staying near Leidongping or Golden Summit improves your chances, but weather controls everything. Golden Summit can be foggy even when the lower mountain is clear.

Avoid major Chinese holidays such as May Day, National Day Golden Week, Spring Festival, and peak summer holiday periods if possible.

Buddhist Culture and Etiquette

Mount Emei is a living Buddhist mountain. It is not only a sightseeing site.

Basic etiquette:

  • speak quietly inside temples;
  • dress respectfully;
  • do not touch statues, ritual objects, drums, bells, or incense burners;
  • follow signs about photography;
  • do not block worshippers;
  • be polite to monks and staff;
  • be cautious about expensive incense or donation pressure.

You do not need to perform Buddhist rituals to visit respectfully. Observing quietly is enough.

Knowing that Mount Emei is associated with Samantabhadra / Puxian Bodhisattva makes the Golden Summit experience easier to understand.

What to Pack

Bring:

  • passport;
  • comfortable non-slip shoes;
  • rain jacket or poncho;
  • warm layer for Golden Summit;
  • water;
  • small snacks, kept hidden in monkey areas;
  • power bank;
  • screenshots of Chinese place names;
  • a little RMB cash;
  • motion sickness medicine if needed;
  • a small backpack.

Do not bring large luggage into the scenic area. Store it at your hotel or at a luggage storage point near the visitor center if available.

Food and drinks are available in the scenic area, but prices rise as you go higher.

Mount Emei + Leshan Giant Buddha

The Leshan Giant Buddha is often combined with Mount Emei because both are in the same region and share UNESCO heritage status.

The Buddha is a 71-meter stone carving and one of the most famous Buddhist monuments in China. You can see it by walking near the statue or by boat from the river. The boat view is often easier if you are short on time.

Best plan:

  • Two days: Leshan Giant Buddha on Day 1, Mount Emei Golden Summit on Day 2.
  • Three days: Mount Emei lower mountain on Day 1, Golden Summit on Day 2, Leshan Giant Buddha on Day 3.

If you only care about mountains, you can skip Leshan. If you care about Buddhist culture, the combination is excellent.

Common Mistakes

1. Buying a ticket to Emei Station instead of Emeishan Station

For high-speed rail visitors, Emeishan Station is usually the right station.

2. Thinking Mount Emei is a short walk from base to summit

The summit is over 3,000 meters high. Use the shuttle bus and cable car unless you are intentionally hiking for multiple days.

3. Trying to combine Mount Emei and Leshan Giant Buddha in one relaxed day

It is possible only as a very rushed tour. Independent travelers should avoid it.

4. Treating monkeys like pets

Do not feed, tease, touch, or approach them. Keep food hidden and bags closed.

5. Wearing bad shoes

Rain, moss, stone steps, and winter ice can make the mountain slippery.

Ticket prices, opening hours, shuttle bus times, cable car operations, hotel availability, temple access, and passport booking rules can change. Verify key details through official channels or your booking platform before traveling.
